The Making of a Dream Dress

Guest Post: The ladies of Kathryn's Bridal swung by the blog to discuss how with a little help, brides can turn their gown into a completely unique dress of their dreams.

Kathryn’s Bridal had the pleasure of meeting Bride to Be Sarah when her search for the perfect wedding gown began in late February of 2015.  Sarah was accompanied to her initial appointment by all the special ladies in her life.  Trying on dresses was a fun celebration and everyone excitedly cheered Sarah on as she enthusiastically said YES to her dress.
“We just love helping brides find their wedding gown!” smiles Kathryn Trocki, owner of Kathryn’s Bridal. “And, saying yes to the dress is the ultimate goal of every bride. So, it can also be a bittersweet moment of realization that the search for a monumental dream dress has concluded. Some brides subconsciously regret ending the shopping process and feel compelled to try on more dresses in order to remain a perpetual bride. Other brides may have a brief case of buyer’s remorse attributed to the exhilaration of the moment they fell in love with their dress.”

A few weeks after saying yes, Sarah realized that the gown she selected was indeed beautiful, but lacked the chic couture details and elements that expressed her personality. She needed to have a dress that was unlike any other, a masterpiece, a truly original dress! Little did Sarah know that an artist with the necessary qualifications to completely redesign a gown works at Kathryn’s Bridal as a professional seamstress.
Sarah immediately phoned Kathryn’s Bridal and articulated her concerns to the receptionist. Fortunately, full-time seamstress Laura was available to chat and listen to Sarah’s wish list. Laura has been making original bridal redesigns for decades and was excited to help Sarah have the dress of her dreams. To make the dream dress a reality, Laura asked Sarah to find pictures of gowns that contained the unique features she envisioned.
“At the first alterations meeting, Sarah brought seven photos which she laid across the floor highlighting the particular must-haves for her new dress,” says Laura.  “We discussed every picture and brainstormed how to include each particular design aspect in to the final creation. After much thought, I created a detailed plan to embellish, modify, cut, restyle and remake Sarah’s original dress to create the distinctive new version.”
The multi appointment transformation plan included removing the crinoline from the existing dress, adding 2 layers of tulle, a layer of organza with color, and 2 more layers of ivory tulle to create a whimsical light flowing skirt. Next came modifying the front neckline to a deep sweet-heart, opening up the back to a sweeping reveal and then designing modern straps.
As a self-confessed perfectionist, Laura was on a shopping mission to find the exact fabrics needed to bring Sarah’s vision to fruition. Several weeks later, Laura met with Sarah and her mother, Kathy to present a wide range of sample fabric options. Sarah was so impressed with Laura’s attention to detail. Thus, when Laura recommended taking the ombre effect to a softer tone, Sarah immediately responded with, “I trust you, so just do it!”
As the gown’s progress accelerated, Sarah was now hopeful she would have the dress of her dreams to walk down the aisle. Couture embellished straps were added to mirror the look of one of the photos. Further details included a slit cut up the front of the gown and a gathered sash with long organza tails which was knotted rather than tied in a traditional bow. “The final design became a wedding gown that was truly a masterpiece!” beams Laura.
“We are so blessed to have staff members like Laura who are dedicated to delivering on our promise of premier service to every bride,” adds Kathryn. “Our brides are able to relax and enjoy working with us because they know we truly care about making them happy and aisle ready.”
