To DIY or not to DIY...that is the question many couples ask themselves as they begin to plan their weddings! Here are the three big things you should consider as you try to answer it for yourselves:

1.Time
Most DIY projects will devour the most valuable of commodities: your time. Before you commit to decoupaging 75 candle holders, folding a thousand paper cranes, or cutting and gluing 400 paper flowers, consider whether or not you have several hours a week between now and your wedding to make that happen! If you are a busy professional, writing your dissertation, and planning a cross-country move, DIY might not be your best plan of action.

2. Money
There is a nasty rumor going around that DIY will save you money! Sometimes, that's true. (For example, doing your own flowers will usually cut the cost quite a bit; however, it also means you, your fiance and any helpful folks you can round up will spend the day before your wedding cutting stems and arranging flowers instead of getting a massage.) Often, the cost difference is negligible, or doing it yourself can actually cost you more. Compare prices for materials with proposals from the pros to figure it out.

3. Skill/Desire
And here's the biggie – are you personally capable of turning raw materials into a finished piece that meets your aesthetic criteria? Will it be fun for you and your future spouse, or would you rather get a root canal? Maybe you are a regular Martha Stewart crafting machine! Or maybe you are more likely to hot glue your finger around the mason jar than that lace. Only you know the answer to that. As we tell our clients – if you don't already love to craft and know how to do it well, your wedding may not be the best time to learn.


Here's Our Pro Tip: Make a sample! You can easily figure out how much time, effort, and skill are needed for a DIY project by making one sample and running a stopwatch while you do it. From that you can extrapolate the time you'll need to invest to get it done. Add up the material costs, multiply by the total number you need, and you'll know the overall cost of the project so you can compare it to a florist or event designer's proposal. Finally, consider whether it was fun or made you want to tear your hair out, and you'll know what is the best choice for YOU!

A trip to Montreal served as the source of inspiration for the Jean-Ralph Thurin Fall 2015 collection. After visiting the famed Faberge exhibit and being immediately entranced by the attention to detail and sheer beauty of each egg created by Peter Carl Faberge, Jean-Ralph returned to his studio ready to design a collection, which reflected the spirit of these designs. Intricate details and subtle touches of elegance and sophistication are the benchmark of this season.
