Something Borrowed...
Party rentals can help you create the wedding of your dreams

When you think rentals, do you envision tuxes, tents and tableware? Now add to that list fantasy wall coverings, designer handbags, antique jewelry, and butterflies. Basically, you can rent practically anything today—and that means you can transform your wedding into the fantasy you’ve always dreamed of!

Setting the Scene
While there is a vast array of reception venues available, you might be looking for something a bit more exotic than the traditional banquet facility. Do you want your guests to enter your reception and leave the world behind? To be immersed in an environment of your own creation? Well, that’s possible.

You can give them a feast for the eyes by renting wall coverings from props and scenery companies. In most cases, you can choose from a wide selection of hand-painted, pre-made backdrops or have them custom paint your own idea. With backdrops, you can surround your guests with views of Paris, ancient Rome, a rainforest, or a starry sky.

Local prop and scenery companies will usually provide delivery, set-up, and takedown services. There are even companies that offer design services and will work with you, your wedding planner, and the management of your wedding and reception facilities to transform your space into something completely unique. Other companies, offering nationwide service, will ship the backdrops to you and you will either have to install and uninstall them yourself or pay someone to do it for you. If you go this route, you may save some money, but you will have to work out the logistics with your reception hall facility yourself.

Anything You Can Imagine
Oftentimes when couples think rental, they also think functional—tables, chairs, linens and the like. But rental items can add to the beauty and the fun of the evening, actually providing entertainment in addition to the band and DJ you’ve hired.

Maybe you want to have a jukebox available for part of the evening so people can pick their favorite oldies. Or what about a Karaoke system to add to the fun? You can even give your guests something to jump about with a trampoline or Moonwalk. Or, loosen them up and keep them laughing with a giant slide.

The rental possibilities are virtually limitless. Add to the beauty of the evening with a working fountain, a wishing well or a mini-tiered waterfall. To give your evening a special glow, think of renting special-event lighting equipment to transform the space.

Truly, if you want it, you can rent it. If your rental company doesn’t have what you are looking for, in most cases they can find it for you. From disco balls and bubble machines, to tiki bars and strobe lights, most companies can be one-stop shops for many items you want to rent.

A Moment in Time
As if all these rental items aren’t enough, you can also rent a special “moment.” As you leave the ceremony or during your reception, you can arrange for a snow dove or butterfly release.

While this beautiful and symbolic gesture is sure to delight your guests, there are a few factors you will need to consider. Butterflies are cold-blooded creatures that should only be released during warm weather, and most reputable butterfly release companies will stick to this guideline. Doves can be released all year-round, but should be released during daylight hours to give them enough time to return home. A quality dove and butterfly release company will be able to answer your questions to ensure that the release is done humanely and artfully to ensure a beautiful moment.

So, if you’re interested in setting the scene with unique décor, creative displays and unforgettable moments, you’re in luck. Rental companies can help you find just what you’re looking for to make your big day perfect... and personalized!

Wedding Announcement
Kathryn’s Bridal Partners with Brides Across America to Give Free Dresses to Military Wives

Kathryn’s Bridal Salon is teaming up with Brides Across America to make wedding dreams come true for many military brides. Kathryn’s Bridal Salon will host a wedding gown giveaway, donating designer dresses as a special thanks to our service men and women. The annual event will be hosted at the McHenry salon on July 10th.

Many military brides find it difficult to plan their “fairy tale” wedding due to deployment, injury or economic circumstances. Brides Across America founder Heidi Janson is on a mission herself, to make their dreams come true.  “This is a Cinderella moment that any bride would dream about,” she says. Brides are encouraged to bring a photo of their fiancé to share their story while shopping for their perfect wedding gown.

In order to qualify, brides or their fiancé must be serving in the military; either currently deployed, have a future deployment or have been deployed within the last five years to Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Qatar, Libya, Kuwait, Korea, or Japan. Brides must pre-register for the event and identification and deployment papers must be presented at the event to qualify. Pre-registration is required and entrance requires a $20 donation.

Tips from the Pro: Fashion Tips for the Mother of the Bride
By Kathryn Trocki, owner of Kathryn’s-Bridal

Remember Kate Middleton’s wedding to Prince William? Sure you do. But do you also remember how great Kate’s mother, Carole, looked? Mrs. Middleton ignited a new focus on the mother of the bride to look elegant and terrific. Obviously, the bride is the focal point of the big day, but “Mom” is important, too. She will be one of the most photographed women at your wedding, and in years to come, you want her to be proud of her appearance. These pictures will be the memories you cherish and share with your children, her grandchildren.

After you have decided on the color scheme of your wedding, encourage your mom to begin looking for her attire. Most mothers underestimate their importance, but mothers of both the bride and groom deserve to look beautiful, too. With all the countless hours and dollars that have gone into planning the perfect day, both mothers should be dressed accordingly. The bride is the princess of her wedding, and the mothers are the queens.

So, what should they wear? “Stay away from any dress in neon colors or animal prints, a dress that shows an awful lot of cleavage or anything that shows your thighs in their entirety,” according to The Everything Mother of the Bride Book by Katie Martin. Mothers should not worry about hiding their arms, because putting your hand on the hip creates a slimming silhouette, especially important for photographs. A mother’s dress should complement her body type and make her feel beautiful. Suggest a color that highlights her tones and coordinates with the bridesmaids’ dresses. “You want to avoid white, ivory, black, red, anything too bright (like an electric blue gown) and anything too overdone,” comments Martin in the book.

Kathryn’s Bridal personally selects the inventory with great care – make an appointment to see what we have to offer. Here’s one of our favorites for the mother of the bride:

Kathryn’s Bridal is McHenry’s premiere bridal shop with an exquisite selection of gowns for brides, bridesmaids, mothers of the bride, flowergirls and more. Kathryn’s Bridal also sells a vast line of accessories and custom invitations.

Real Wedding
Kelly Christensen & Carlos Butler, Renaissance Chicago Hotel

“We’ve known each other since 2001 but only as friends. Carlos attended my first wedding and after years passed and I moved to California, Carlos still kept in touch with me. In 2009, my first husband passed away of cancer, and in 2010 I decided to move back to Chicago for a new job.

Carlos picked me up at the airport when I came into town and helped a lot with my transition. On the first weekend I had to work my new job, I didn’t yet have a nanny for my son, Calvin. So, Carlos babysat him for the day. Both Carlos and Calvin survived the day and even had fun. So Carlos found himself babysitting Calvin several times after that. Any apprehension Carlos had of one day maybe jumping into the ‘dad’ role dissipated, and being with Calvin, it meant that he got to spend a lot more time with me.

Although the friend role continued for awhile, one night in the summer of 2011, we were hanging out with a mutual group of friends and ended up at dinner. During the course of the evening, we took a walk around the block, just the two of us. He took my hand and asked, “Would you like to start dating me?” Yes, that is how he phrased it. From then on, we were together and things started moving rather quickly.

Carlos first proposed to me in Hawaii. We were married in September with Carlos walking down the aisle with our daughter Kyra who was 5 months old at the time of wedding and I walked down the aisle with 4-year-old Calvin.”
